Pope Francis is wrong on the death penalty

The Pope is wrong on the Death Penalty

by Bishop Tom Brown

Pope Francis has called for a “dialogue”, and this opinion piece is my side of the dialogue. I can court the favor of some by singing kumbaya with the Pope, but that would not lead to real dialogue. Instead, I offer my respectful analysis of the speeches he gave before Congress and the United Nations.

I agreed with almost everything the Pope said, especially regarding the call for us to do more to save the refugees and the need to be respectful to the immigrants in our country.

My disappointment has mostly to do with what the Pope left out and deemphasized.

It was a cardinal mistake for the Pope not to mention the name, Jesus Christ. This is a glaring omission. While I agree we should cut down on carbon emissions, this will not lead to the salvation of humankind. Jesus Christ is our salvation. Following His teachings will lead to a better world.

Another problem I had was with the Pope’s refusal to directly condemn abortion or same-sex marriage. He opted, instead, to make ambiguous statements which could be construed to mean he disagrees with abortion and homosexual marriage. However, he had no trouble being clear on his condemnation of the human cause of global warming, yet he could not muster enough courage to condemn even greater threats to our humanity. The casual observer could easily conclude that the Pope is more concerned with cutting carbon emissions than saving the lives of the unborn.

While the Pope gave a nod to the benefits of capitalism in our country, his call and theory to redistribute wealth in order to promote equality is, in my view, anti-capitalism, and will not promote prosperity for all.

There was only one thing I totally disagree with the Pope and that is his call for the global end to the death penalty.

The Pope of all persons should know that God instituted the death penalty through human governments. He did it after the global flood: “I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man” (Genesis 9:5-6).

God instituted the death penalty for two reasons: first to deter the human race in becoming as wicked as they became, which led to the necessity of God judging the human race with a flood. The second reason for the death penalty was to show the sanctity of human life. Humans are not another animal that can be killed without the ultimate penalty.

God emphasized to Noah that humankind is made in “the image of God” and, therefore, to kill a human is to kill something divinely sacred. The only just compensation for a life taken is for the murderer to give up his life. This is just and shows the sanctity of human life.

Both the Pope and myself believes in the sanctity of lifeall life from conception to deathhowever, I believe he is sincerely wrong in how to show that sanctity. The Pope emphasizes the lives of murderers, but by doing so, he minimizes the lives of the victims and their families. This is inherently inhumane, unjust and shows lack of mercy toward the victims. It dehumanizes the victim and makes the life of the murderer more important than the life of the innocent.

Concerning the sanctity of the lives of murderers, there is no better rehabilitation than the death penalty. More murderers have repented and accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord because their days are numbered than those let out of prison. Who wouldn’t get their lives straighten out when they know the date of their death?

Finally, I want to thank Pope Francis for visiting the United States and for the inspiration he has been to many millions of Americans. I especially thank him for his magnanimous spirit for dialoging with us, rather than laying down the law. God speed!

Prayer and Fasting Removed Demons

Prayer and Fasting Removes Demons

Matt 17:20-21 20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;* for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”* NKJV

  1. There are some miracles which will not be done without prayer and fasting. Health, prosperity, marriage trouble, difficulty with children, demons tormenting.
    1. Fasting is refraining from food for spiritual purposes.
      1. Not a hunger strike.
    2. The Guillens and their little child.
    3. Fasting enlarges the capacity of faith. Faith comes from hearing the Word, but fasting enlarges the heart to receive more faith.
    4. Illustration: two glasses, one large the other small, large pitcher much bigger than all glasses and pour pitcher into the glasses.
    5. Argument against fasting: Fasting doesn’t change God. True, but neither does prayer nor giving.
    6. One of my early breakthrough miracles came through fasting for 7 days. Cynthia healed.
    7. Daniel’s breakthrough came through a 21 day fast.
  1. Jesus discipline of prayer.

Luke 6:12-13

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.

  1. Unusual time to pray all night. He did this when He needed to make the important decision as to who was going to be His apostles.

Luke 9:28-29

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.

  1. Times to join others in corporate prayer.

Luke 11:1

11 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

  1. People do not understand how they can pray long, such as an hour. How long do you shop?
  2. Do you exercise for an hour? Upper body, lower body, full body
    1. Walk and run on the tread mill.
    2. Stretches (leg curls,
    3. Bench presses
    4. weight lifts
    5. bar bell curls
    6. crunches
    7. squats
  3. Jesus gave the pattern of the prayer exercise.
    1. Our Father (worship and praise)
    2. Thy kingdom (submission to fruits and gifts)
    3. Give us (petition)
    4. Forgive (confession and forgiveness)
    5. Lead us (spiritual warfare)

Mark 14:32-33

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

  1. Jesus ended his earthly ministry in prayer.

Matt 5:44

44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

  1. Pray for enemies. Use the Lord’s prayer to pray for them: Pray that enemies learn to hallow God’s name, to come under God’s kingdom rule, love to do God’s will, grant that enemies have the resources and daily bread, pray for them to be forgiven.

2 Thess 1:11-12

11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. God count you worthy of His calling
  2. God’s power to help you fulfill every good purpose of yours and every acted prompted by your faith.
  3. That the name of the Lord Jesus be glorified in you.

  • Practical tips on fasting.
    1. How long, how much should I fast?
    2. Three types of fast:
      1. Complete fast. No food or water.
      2. Regular fast. No food, but plenty of liquids.
  • Partial fast. No choice foods. Sweets, meats, or bread.
  1. Duration:
    1. Half day (practice twice a week, Lk 18:12) Daylight.
    2. One day (Is 58:5)
  • Two days (Est 9:31) Note: Weight loss is dramatic on the first 2 days.
  1. Three days (Est 4:16)
  2. Seven days
  3. Twenty one days (Dan 10)
  • 40 days

Phil 3:19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.

  1. Caesarea, Vomitorium. Picture of Vomitorium Summary about fasting: Going without food for spiritual purposes.

Gen 3:6 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

  1. Eating drove Adam and Eve from paradise and they incurred the displeasure of God.

Ezek 16:49 49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

  1. Over eating led to Sodom’s detestable practices and their eventual judgment.

Gen 25:34 34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.

  1. Lust for food ruined Esau’s destiny.

Num 11:32-34 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.

  1. And complaining about food brought to death a multitude of Israelis.
  1. Do you want to hear more clearly from God? Do you desire to know Jesus more intimately? Do you long to know his direction for your life? Do you need a miracle?
    1. Prayer and Fasting could be the answer to all these desires.
    2. Often when people say, “I have done everything I know to turn this situation around” they often have not done prayer and fasting.
    3. Hear from God! Moses received the Ten Commandments after 40 days of fasting.
    4. Esther received a miracle after calling for a fast!
    5. Hannah received a miracle! (1 Sam 1:18).

Happily Ever After

Happily Ever After

Matt 19:4-6

4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’   5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

  1. Happily ever after does not have to be a fairy tale.
    1. The reason Jesus expected marriage to last a lifetime was because He believed marriage could be that good and wonderful. God intended marriage to last a lifetime, because it would be the best thing that ever happened to you.
    2. There is nothing in the world that you would want for life:
      1. Story of Beverly Hills hair stylist, yet, no one would want to keep the same hair style for life.
      2. Cars, clothes,
      3. Maybe tattoos.
    3. What God has joined together.” This is the secrete. God made marriage for humans made in His likeness. What God makes will last a lifetime.
    4. Nothing humans make last forever. They deteriorate.
    5. Joke of the ant and elephant.
    6. Since God joins together two people in holy matrimony, then God takes it upon Himself to give all the graces the couple needs to be married happily ever after.

John 2:1-10

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

  1. Jesus first miracle illustrated God’s part and humans part in making something so joyful that it brings happiness to people.
    1. Story of married couple that ran out of wine.
    2. Illustrate: Couples sometimes think they do not have what it takes to stay happy for their whole lives.

2 On the third day a wedding took place

  1. Speaks of the resurrection. Sometimes a marriage can be buried. No hope.

4 why do you involve me?”

  1. Great mistake is to not involve the Lord in your marriage.

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

  1. Obeying Christ will bring a miracle into your marriage.

9 He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

  1. The world will never understand why your marriage is so good, but you will know it is because the Lord made it so good.

10 you have saved the best till now.”

  1. Marriage can get better and better as you grow old together. Honeymoon should be the worst time in your marriage.
  • Like wine, it gets better with age. So marriage can become happier as you stay together in marriage. However, wine signifies both God’s part and man’s part in making wine.
    1. Plant the seed, water the seed and grapes, harvest the grapes, crush the grapes and store the juice into wine skins (barrels). Humankind can do nothing after this. It is all God.

Gen 2:18

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

  1. Plant the seed. Respect the opposite gender. End the war of the sexes.
    1. Seed can do nothing without the ground.
    2. “Helper suitable”
      1. Help–the other person and yourself must be the cause of blessings. If you or the other ceases to be a help, and, instead, becomes a hindrance to other person, then God’s intention for marriage has been thwarted.\
      2. Suitable–Literally, the opposite and corresponding strength. They will be the yin to your yang. Picture of yin and yang.
    3. My struggle early in our marriage revolved around Sonia’s emotional sensitivity.
      1. I miss my mommy.

1 Peter 3:7

7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

1 Peter 3:7

7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them wisely, giving honour unto the woman, as unto a more fragile vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers not be hindered.

Jubilee Bible

  1. China is more fragile than Tupperware, yet it is more valuable and precious.

Eph 5:25-26

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

  1. Water the seed and budding grapes.
    1. Effort when you see nothing.
    2. Love is not lust!

Eph 4:19

19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

  1. Lust is never satisfied. If you lust for your wife, she will never satisfy you. You will want more from her and when she cannot give it, you will look for others who can.
  2. Water with the Word of God. You can water, but you did not make the water.

Matt 7:24-27

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

  1. Note: Jesus turn the water into wine because the servants obeyed His word to fill the jars with water.
  2. Life lesson: Read the sermon on the Mount as a couple then share what you learn pertaining to marriage.
  3. The only reason marriages dissolve is because one or both partners chose to stop living by the Word.
  4. Forgive, see the best, humble.

Lev 25:5

5 Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines.

  1. Harvest the grapes.
    1. You only get what you worked for.
    2. Get joy only from your spouse.

Ps 128:2-4

2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;

blessings and prosperity will be yours.

3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine

within your house;

your sons will be like olive shoots

around your table.

4 Thus is the man blessed

who fears the Lord.

  1. Grass is always greener on the other side.
  2. Unfaithfulness to the spouse.
  3. Don’t have a right to have sex unless the person is your spouse.

2 Sam 13:1

13 In the course of time, Amnon son of David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom son of David.

  1. Forbidden love.

2 Sam 13:13-15

please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.” 14 But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her.

15 Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!”

  1. Forbidden sex will turn into hatred.
  2. When a spouse overnight turns away from their spouse, it is usually a sign that they have forbidden love for someone else.
  3. Book and movie, Fifty shades of Grey.
    1. Soft porn, glorifies sexual abuse against women and distorts the true meaning of love.
    2. University of Michigan did a study on the effects of Fifty Shades of Grey on women readers. It showed that women who read the books were 25 percent more likely to have an abusive partner; 34 percent were more likely to have a partner who stalked them; and 65 percent were more likely to engage in binge drinking.
  4. Master of the banquet took the bridegroom aside to compliment him. This shows respect to the husband.
  • Crushes the grapes and puts juice into wineskins. Then God takes over.
    1. Crushing blows to marriage.
    2. Skin of a goat. Skin made from tail and leg of the goat.

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing

  1. Stone jars used in ceremonial washings. Stone jars made out of clay (ground).
  2. Six speaks of the sixth day of creation where God created both Adam and Eve. Sin took place on the seventh day.
  3. Ceremonial washings. Cleansing of sin. Holy.
  4. Lesson: your marriage is in this carnal world (skins) where people often act like animals, but God takes your life (jars), and works the miracle in your heart through cleaning of sin and forgiveness, He turns the water into wine.
  5. Marriage is like a triangle, God on top and the husband and wife below at the corner. The closer they get to God, the closer they get to each other. Picture of triangle.

By Jesus’ Stripes You are Healed

By Jesus’ Stripes You are Healed

1 Peter 2:24

24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

1 Peter 2:24

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

  1. Stripes is a reference to the scourging Jesus received from the Romans. Picture of Jesus back
    1. You have been healed. Don’t limit your healing.
    2. Different areas of healing:
      1. Sin (Forgiveness)
      2. Addictions (Deliverance)
      3. Broken heart

Ps 147:3

3 He heals the brokenhearted

and binds up their wounds.

  1. Break up

  5. Homosexuals/ Transgender

Cinni Frank: “I use to be gay and Jesus Christ revealed himself to me and my purpose in this world and I was set free. I have no desires for a same sex relationship. I was gay because I was broken and confused about who I was. Freedom is there to anyone who is willing to call upon Jesus Christ for his will for your life. Whom the Son Set Free is Free Indeed.”

  1. Prostitutes. Mary Magdalene.
    1. Exhaustion

Matt 11:28-29

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  1. Insomnia

Prov 3:24

24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

  1. Physical, illness, disease or injury.
  1. Cynthia healed and minister said healing was not physical.

Matt 8:17

This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities

and carried our diseases.”

  1. Jesus healing ministry based on the cross and his sufferings.
    1. God can heal the whole man.

John 7:23

23 Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath?

  1. Sin, bad attitude and paralyzed.
  2. Mathew quotes from the most famous Old Testament passage about the passion of the Christ.

Isa 53:4-5

4 Surely he took up our infirmities

and carried our sorrows,

yet we considered him stricken by God,

smitten by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

  • Jesus did more than shed his blood. He painfully shed his blood.
    1. Matthew confirms this is about Christ healing ministry.
    2. Passion of the Christ: Infirmities, sorrows, stricken, afflicted, pierced, crushed, punishment.
    3. Healing of the Christ: Peace and healed.

Gal 4:4-5

4          But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,

5          to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

  1. Receive the full rights of sons.
  2. You must be a son to receive the rights of sonship.
  3. God promised healing and prosperity under the Old Covenant, but many deny it under the New Covenant.

Heb 8:6

6          But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.

  1. Rights must be claimed.
  2. “By faith receive the promise”
  3. Claim baggage if you show the receipt. You don’t stop believing that the bags are yours simply because they are not in your possession.
  4. Story of John Alexander Dowie, Sidney Australia, Bubonic plague around 1875, buried 40 members. Mary. Read the prayer. “Redeemed” by Kenneth Hagin, pages 17-19
  5. “You have been healed.” You are already healed.
  1. Legal verses experiential blessings. It is possible to legally be free from the curses but in your experience still be trapped by the curses. In the coming weeks, we will explain how to experience the blessings.

Redeemed from Sickness and Poverty

Redeemed from Sickness and Poverty

Gal 3:13-14

13        Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

14        He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

  1. You are redeemed to be blessed. Curse is an invisible force intended to bring judgment, harm and misfortune to another.
  2. “Lord, what’s wrong. I’m born again, I love you, but nothing seems to be working for me. I can’t pay my bills, I can’t control my children, my spouse doesn’t love me, I’m depressed all the time, and I’m always struggling with sickness and pain.”
  3. The cause of your problems could be a curse working against you. There are curses that block the blessing.

Prov 26:2

2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,

an undeserved curse does not come to rest.

  1. Curses are deserved but Christ came to give us the “undeserved blessings” of God.

Isa 50:1

50:1 This is what the LORD says:

“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce

with which I sent her away?

Or to which of my creditors

did I sell you?

Because of your sins you were sold;

because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.

  1. Redemption—Gr. lytron—a ransom; to buy back; to set free. It denotes that the previous owner owned an object but lost it through debt, only to purchase it back.

1 Peter 1:17-20

18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Gal 3:10

  • All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
  1. Many limit redemption to being purchased so one does not have to go to hell. But redemption is so you do not have to be under a curse.

Curse of the Law is uttered in Deut. 27:26

  1. Curses will come if you depend on your ability to keep “all” the Law. You need to focus not on your observance but on observing what the cross did for you. There is a difference between observing the Law and doing the Word.
  2. The results of the curse are mentioned in the next chapter. These are called the curses. The curse brings the curses.
  3. Read Deut 28:15-68 We are redeemed from each of these curses.
  1. This is what Paul was referring to.
  • Christ redeemed us from these curses by becoming a curse for us.
    1. The curse is many-fold:
    2. Poverty
    3. Sickness
    4. Emotional trauma
    5. If Christ did indeed redeem us from these curses then we should find some examples of Him taking these curses, especially poverty and sickness.

Deut 28:48

48 therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you.

  1. Curse of Poverty is outlined in Deut 28:48
  2. Hunger, thirst, nakedness and hunger. Jn 19:23,28

John 19:23-24

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

John 19:28

28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
