7 They also shut the doors of the portico and put out the lamps. They did not burn incense or present any burnt offerings at the sanctuary to the God of Israel. 8 Therefore, the anger of the Lord has fallen on Judah and Jerusalem; he has made them an object of dread and horror and scorn, as you can see with your own eyes.

  1. The previous generation of Hezekiah failed God by not keeping their lamps burning.

Jesus descended into Hell

Scriptures and Conclusions concerning

Jesus Descent into hell

Rom 10:6-8

“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?'” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?'” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

Ps 68:18

18 When you ascended on high,

you led captives in your train;

you received gifts from men,

Matt 12:40-41

40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Acts 2:22-25

22 “Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:

Eph 4:7-11

7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says:

“When he ascended on high,

“When he ascended on high,

he led captives in his train

and gave gifts to men.”

9  (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)

1 Peter 3:18-21

18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

1 Peter 4:6

6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

Rev 1:18

18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Facts about Jesus descent into hell:

  1. He descended into the “heart of the earth” and “lower earthly regions.”
  2. He preached or proclaimed to the spirits in prison who disobeyed during the times of Noah. Since Noah was a “preacher of righteousness” this could not be a reference to preaching the gospel to those in Noah’s day, but rather to the “spirits” who sinned by taking the women as their wives.
  3. Gospel was preached to those who are now dead, but this could be a reference to those who had died since hearing the gospel. At the same time, Jesus did preach the gospel to those in paradise.
  4. Jesus met the thief in paradise the day he died.
  5. Did Jesus suffer after he died? Yes, since Peter mentions “freeing him from the agony of death”
  6. At his ascension He led captives free.

45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
